Character World:
Personality: Killua exudes the atmosphere of a playful, irreverent child – maybe a bit of a brat. Part of this is actively cultivated, since people tend to underestimate the ‘cute kid’, allowing him to more easily take advantage of them. But part is due to Killua’s inherent personality: fickle and casually dishonest, even nihilistic at times. Killua possesses no real driving motivation for himself, has little concept of the value of money, and even displays streaks of maliciousness from time to time. Though this last is generally reserved for individuals who have already deliberately antagonized him (muggers, thugs), Killua occasionally lashes out at innocent people as well. In an exhibition match at a public fighting arena, for instance, he’s faced with an opponent who can’t be defeated with one blow. Frustrated becomes frustrated when one of his opponents can’t be defeated with one blow; he ends up hitting back hard enough to hospitalize him in one blow.

At the same time, Killua is trying to reform himself somewhat.

Lying and downplaying his concerns was an integral part

Raised as assassin
Killua comes from a family entirely made up of professional assassins. As his potential to become one of the top in his profession was recognized early on, Killua was raised more or less from birth to be a cold-blooded, calculating killer, one whose only concern in battle was to gauge whether he could make the kill or not. He was tortured regularly, terrorized by his oldest brother, and isolated from other children his age or those with whom he might develop friendships. As a result, Killua quickly learned to expect harsh treatment, downplay his own pain and discomfort, and adopt an air of nihilism and disinterest – the better to mask his feelings and weaknesses. Eventually, however, Killua tired of killing. He attacked two family members, including his own mother, and escaped from the family compound, choosing instead to befriend Gon, a boy of similar age, and accompany him on his quest to locate Gon’s father.

He has no compunctions about lying if it benefits him or his friends

His concept of money is extremely skewed, mostly owing to his upbringing in a ridiculously wealthy household. And he carefully maintains the appearance

How will your character be altered?: Just gills, pretty much.
Abilities/Powers/Alterations thereof:

Why do you want to apply with this character? Most of Hunter x Hunter revolves around exploring its setting -- traveling to different countries, meeting new people, experiencing personal growth, getting caught up in local events, and so on. Killua is an adaptable, playful character trying to figure out who he is and who he wants to become, with few attachments to the world in general, so he'd be well-suited to start messing around and exploring. Without Gon around, he'll have less direction, but still retain his curiosity.

Think Fast!:Pick one of the following things. It has just happened to your character, what do they do? (A few sentences tops of the character's thoughts to themselves. You may elaborate on the prompt a little first if you like.)
4) Uh oh, you're caught in the rain!
Killua sneezed; the motion threw his head forward and his shoulders back. He looked up, wiping at his nose and sniffling a little.

Stupid. I should have bought an umbrella back at the convenience store.

But it was too late now, unless he wanted to backtrack and risk missing the rendezvous. Nah. Best to just stick it out and get back quickly. Then he could compare notes with Gon, come up with their strategy for the next few days. Killua scanned the area for signs of the man he was supposed to meet, but... so far, nothing. Either this dude was late, too, or something had gone wrong... maybe he'd chickened out at the last minute.

Brief (around 300 words) personality outline of your character:
Killua comes across as a cheeky little rich kid. He adores sweets, toys, and games, rides around on a skateboard, and is easily bored. He also loves showing off his abilities and knowledge, especially when he can present himself as worldly for his age. In battle situations, he often dispatches weak opponents in a playful manner, rarely harming them in any serious fashion -- something he can afford to do using his experience in gauging fighting ability.

When faced with strong opponents or unknowns, however, his training as an assassin kicks in and his demeanor changes abruptly. Killua becomes extremely businesslike and calculating, attempting to gauge his exact chances of winning. If he can't, or if he judges that his chances of defeating his enemy aren't 100%, he is mentally conditioned to run away without fail regardless of whether he actually wants to do so. Since overcoming this mental block, he is able to choose whether he wants to run or keep fighting a losing battle, although the urge to turn tail is still there.

In situations where he feels threatened, Killua is prone to lose his temper or slip out of control, using unnecessary force to try and harm them even if they harbor no ill will. For example, during the Heaven's Arena arc, he judges his opponent, Zushi, to be weak and easily defeated. When Zushi proves bafflingly resilient due to an unknown power, he abruptly knocks Zushi out of the ring using so much force he might have seriously injured anyone else.

Killua is energetic, clever, and easily picks up new interests. Conversely, he can be flighty and capricious, casting aside things and people easily. He can squander small fortunes in no time on snacks and toys, and is shown to be somewhat insecure about the friendships he formed during the Hunter exams. In particular, he recognizes the difference between a seasoned killer like himself and an innocent boy like Gon, wondering if the two of them will be able to remain friends, or whether he'll one day betray Gon as his family has warned him he will.

Killua will attempt to behave like a reasonably approximation of a shonen manga protagonist (no killing, fight fair and square, attempt to get knowledge/items through negotiation instead of coercion), but if he feels it's necessary (for example, when protecting Gon), he has no issue with using blackmail, threats, and violence to achieve his goals.

Brief (around 500 words) history and background of your character OR link to a really good wiki page with their history. In either case, explain where they cut off from the timeline:
Killua was born into an infamous family of assassins and was trained to take up the family profession from an extremely young age. His family members isolated him from making any friends and put him through training so grueling it could easily be considered child abuse -- exposing him to poisons, subjecting him to electrical shocks, and beating him. At the age of six, Killua was left to fend for himself at an arena for professional fighters, Heaven's Arena. Killua survived there for two years until he left at the age of eight, having fought his way through 190 straight floors of adult opponents before deciding to quit.

Killua considers this perfectly normal (or at least perfectly normal for his family, which he does recognize is comprised of a bunch of freaks). In fact, he seems to take it all in stride... except for the extreme anxiety/fear he feels when dealing with his older brother (and to a lesser extent, his father), who he recognizes he is absolutely no match for.

Despite his intense childhood conditioning, however, Killua eventually tired of killing, and decided to run away from home instead, injuring his mother and one of his brothers in the process. Eventually, he ended up at the Hunter exams to see if he could become one of the Hunters, a group of extraordinary professionals who use a huge network of resources to hunt down rare animals, foods, criminals, serve as bodyguards, or any number of other career paths. Instead, he ended up meeting the first friends he'd ever had, facing down his family for the right to abandon his life as an assassin, helping his friend Gon track down his elusive father, and even becoming embroiled in a battle against a deadly insect species threatening the existence of humanity itself.

Point in Canon: The Chimera ant arc, in which a deadly insect species with the power to absorb and use Nen abilities washes up in the small country of Neo Green Life. Gon decides to battle his way to the top of the Chimera ant hierarchy, planning to stop the insects before they completely overrun the small kingdom in which they’ve established their territory, under the understanding that if he and his friends fail, the Chimera ants will likely overrun even the combined resources of the Hunters. Killua decides to participate as well, under the understanding that it will probably be the last he sees of Gon. The cutoff should be after Killua removes the mental conditioning pin his brother installed in him to force him to run away from all battles in which his victory was not ensured.

Sample post (just a general, everyday, puttering-around-the-ship post; please include a snippet of dialogue)
:
Killua sucked air into his lungs in a harsh rasp, trying to get his bearings. His body hurt, his chest hurt – and he had no idea where he was. One minute he was in the jungle, hunting down those blasted ants, and the next…

He looked around. Was this some kind of illusion? Had a Chimera caught him using its Nen, maybe transported him to some alternate pocket reality to buy itself or its king some time?

“Gon!” he shouted. There was no answer.

In the air around him, electricity crackled into being, activating nerve impulses and allowing him to stand up and hold himself straight despite the protestations of his aching muscles.

This had better not be another test.

If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are and outline EXACTLY how they function, as their powers may not work due to the nature of the ship or may need to be limited somehow:
Killua has developed superhuman speed and strength by the time he shows up at the Hunter exams, due to the extreme nature of his training; for example, even the doors he must push open to return to his family home home weigh 16 tons. His family has instructed him in assassination techniques, allowing him to:
* Create multiple illusions of himself that surround an opponent and mask his real location
* Transform his hands to give them a clawlike appearance, allowing them to rip open an ordinary person and remove their heart almost instantly

Killua is immune to most poisons and electric attacks are extremely ineffective against him, once again due to the torture he received when he was younger.

Since the Hunter exams, Killua relies more often on his Nen ability than on his assassin's skills. Nen is an ability very similar to Eastern ideas of chi -- in short, it relies on the body's natural energy to attack or defend and anyone can eventually learn to use it. Of the six types of Nen, Killua belongs to the Transmutation type, meaning he can transform his aura to mimic another substance.

Killua’s Hatsu technique allows him to transform his aura into lightning; he can electrocute someone by striking them directly, or hit them with a lightning bolt from a distance. Killua can also emit an electrical field that can directly stimulate his body's nerves. In this condition, his electrical impulses circumnavigate his nervous system entirely, allowing him to move his body at lightning speeds. Killua sometimes uses his nen in conjunction with his two 50kg yo-yos to attack at range.

In addition to his transmutation ability, Killua can use the following basic techniques any Nen practitioner must learn, such as:
Ten: The ability to shroud the body with aura, preventing it from leaking naturally away from their body. Beginners can use Ten to provide a basic defense against physical and emotional attack.

Zetsu: Stops the flow of aura from the body, allowing Nen users to conceal their presence from anyone who might otherwise sense their aura, and become more sensitive to the aura of those around them, allowing them to better track other auras. Zetsu also aids the body in healing, since it contains the aura inside the body, but also leaves the user defenseless to attack from another Nen user.

Ren: A natural progression of Ten: producing a large amount of aura centered around the body, for boosted strength and durability. Ren also allows a Nen user to pool their aura for quick use of their abilities.

Hatsu: The release of Nen to fulfill some purpose. Killua, being of the Transmutation type, would also be fairly capable at Conjuration and Reinforcement Hatsu techniques, but trying to master any other type would be counterproductive, since his abilities would be fairly weak.

In addition, Killua knows some advanced nen techniques, most of which also involve reinforcing parts of the body with aura:

Shu: An advanced form of Ten. A Nen user can envelop an object in their aura, using it as an extension of their own body. For example, a Nen user could strengthen the structure of a playing card, then use it to cut through metal or rock.

En: Extending the aura to envelop a wider area of space around the body, allowing a Nen user to sense anything that enters the area. Masters of En can generally extend their field to 50 meters, but Killua hasn't really developed this skill much. The best he can probably do is a few feet, and not for long, though it can still be a useful skill.

Ken: Allows a Nen user to maintain Ren over their body for an extended period of time, allowing the user to protect his entire body evenly.

In: A progression of Zetsu, which allows a Nen user to become nearly entirely hidden from the senses (In can also be used on aura itself, to hide Nen objects). It can be countered using En or Gyo (if Gyo is used to enhance the eyes).

Gyo: Concentrating a large portion of the aura into a specific body part, such as a fist (to increase the strength of a punch) or the eyes (to improve vision and detect hard-to-see Nen).

Ko: A progression of Gyo; concentrating all of the aura into a single body part and allowing for maximum offensive or defensive power. However, this leaves the rest of the body unguarded.

Ryu: The term for the ability to quickly change the amount of aura deployed to different parts of the body, useful during battle for offense or defense.

Non-superhuman special abilities of note (Is your character a master ventriloquist? A naturally-occurring super-genius? The best martial artist in the world? Say so here):
Killua is an avid gamer and seems to be an amateur skateboard hobbyist. He's a surprisingly good cook.
